RefWorks access now Shibboleth-enabled for Network ID and password

As of mid-October 2008, Lafayette's Shibboleth server allows you to use your Network ID and password to access your RefWorks account. This access method will eventually replace the current authentication mechanism that requires a RefWorks-specific Log-in Name and Password. RefWorks is a web-based application that enables you to create a database of bibliographic references and automatically format the references into a bibliography.

Eric Luhrs selected as NITLE Technology Fellow

NITLE, the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education, has selected Lafayette's Digital Initiatives Librarian Eric Luhrs as one of their newest Technology Fellows. Eric will receive advanced training in order to assist NITLE in promoting and teaching DSpace and related customization tools to other liberal arts colleges. DSpace is an open-source software package that allows institutions to organize and deliver digital scholarly works, such as is often used for institutional repositories.

LexisNexis Wiki for Higher Education offers help tips on using LexisNexis

LexisNexis -- a database for finding full-text articles from newspapers, business and popular magazines, law reviews and legislative sources -- has launched a wiki that gathers tips for conducting effective searches from other users. Such tips include: finding news articles about the 2008 Presidential election, including transcripts from the recent conventions; searching for foreign-language news; and locating editorial pieces. Oxford Islamic Studies Online now available

The library recently began a subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online, a collection of works on Islam and the Islamic world that includes scholarly encyclopedia articles, Qur'anic materials, and primary sources. Connect to the database from the library Web site or here.

Encyclopaedia Judaica available electronically

Lafayette Library users now have access to the electronic version of the second edition (2007) of Encyclopaedia Judaica, the definitive scholarly encyclopedia covering Jewish history and culture, in addition to the 22-volume print version (Skillman Ref. DS102.8 .E496 2007).

The London Times Digital Archive now available at Lafayette

The Libraries recently acquired a new digital collection: The London Times Digital Archive, which includes the full text of The Times from 1785-1985.

Burney Collection of 17th & 18th C. news media available electronically

The Lafayette Libraries just purchased the Burney Collection of Newspapers, which provides electronic access to early English news media from the 17th and 18th centuries, including pamphlets, broadsides, periodicals, and an extensive collection of London newspapers.
