Skillman building access and hours

  • When the Libraries are open during campus operational levels 1 & 2, access to Skillman Library is keyfob only (Faculty/staff can request a fob & students should have one but can report it lost to Public Safety) and will also require a reservation to study in any seat, computer or study room.   • If the campus transitions to operational level 3 or 4, the Libraries will be closed.
  • During levels 1 & 2, walk-in access will be allowed for quickly browsing the shelves, using a quick print station, or an appointment with a staff member.
  • During level 3, appointments to access the building will be considered on a case by case basis; email circ@lafayette.edu to make a request for access.
  • When the building is open, access is limited to Lafayette students, faculty and staff. Outside researchers and Friends of the Library should contact the library for assistance rather than visiting in person.
  • All users must follow specific library guidelines as well as college-wide guidelines for physical distancing and mask-wearing.

Access to electronic resources

  • Our extensive collection of electronic resources is available both on and off campus. To log in to subscription resources from off campus, connect to the resource using a link from the Library’s web site or catalog, then log in with your Network ID and password. More information is available on our remote access page.
  • Our e-resources include many electronic books and streaming films, all of which are included in the Library Catalog. We have a list of some of our most highly used collections of e-books as well as a guide to accessing e-books. Also see our film and media studies research tools page for links to some of our streaming film services.
  • If we don’t have the e-book or film you need, please contact us. We might be able to purchase it or we can suggest alternatives.

Access to physical materials

  • To reduce traffic in the Libraries, we would prefer users to request library materials via our curbside pickup service or our on and off campus mail delivery service. This service is available during all campus operational levels.
  • Users who are on campus may retrieve books and DVDs themselves when Skillman and Kirby are open. Materials should be checked out via a new service that enables users to check out books to themselves on their phone or tablet. A touch screen kiosk is available in each library for users who cannot access the app. Watch a video demonstration.
  • Following the latest guidance related to COVID-19 and library collections, all physical books and DVDs are quarantined for 72 hours when they are returned before being checked in and put back in circulation.

Due dates and returns

  • All Lafayette-owned books borrowed by students, including browsing books, will be due June 2, 2021. All Lafayette-owned books borrowed by faculty or staff, including browsing books, will be due June 3, 2021. All DVDs will go out for 1 month with unlimited renewals.
  • You may return items to the outside book drop next to the front doors of Skillman at any time.
  • Any users who wish to mail their items back to the library should request a pre-paid mailing label.

Interlibrary loan and document delivery

  • Interlibrary loan requests may be placed for all material types. Due to limited libraries loaning material, response times may be longer for physical loans and document delivery requests.
  • We will also mail physical interlibrary loans to users provided they are not restricted to in-library use only. If you would like your ILL request mailed to you, please indicate this in the notes field of your request and include your mailing address. Your item can be mailed to your campus address or to your home address.
  • We are extending our document delivery service to students as well as faculty and staff, which means that users can request that articles and book chapters available only in print format be digitized and sent to them electronically. Use the document delivery link available from the interlibrary loan page to place these requests.

Research help and instructional services

  • Reference and research support will continue to be offered remotely by email, phone, and GoogleMeet/Zoom. Chat reference service is be available
    • 10 am to noon, Monday through Friday
    • 1 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday
    • 7 pm to 10 pm, Monday through Thursday
  • Personalized Research Assistance (PRA) appointments are available and are offered via GoogleMeet/Zoom or phone.
  • Librarians will offer instruction for all classes as needed.

Course reserves

  • Physical reserves are not available. Electronic books and streaming films have been purchased or licensed to replace materials that would otherwise have been put on reserve.
  • Faculty who would like the library to acquire e-books and films for courses should contact Terese Heidenwolf.

Study spaces

  • All seats and study rooms need to be reserved via the library’s website, outside Skillman by scanning a QR code on your phone or inside at the Welcome Table.
  • Seats have been removed from study areas in Skillman, and the remaining chairs are six feet apart or more.
  • Pay attention to occupancy limits of study rooms and masks must be worn inside.
  • Rooms 205, 128, 003, 004 and the Gendebien Room are unavailable for student study, and will be kept locked.

Public computers

Kirby Library

  • When Kirby Library is open during campus operational levels 1 & 2; you will need a reservation to study in any seat.
  • Chairs have been removed from the reading room tables to accommodate one person per table for a total capacity of 6 people in the reading room. The reference room in the back is closed.
  • Self checkout service is available.
  • No computer access or printing services is available.

Special Collections & College Archives

  • Special Collections & College Archives is open by appointment during campus operational levels 1 & 2. Appointments must be made prior to the visit by contacting staff at archives@lafayette.edu.
  • During level 3, appointments to access Special Collections & College Archives will be considered on a case by case basis; email archives@lafayette.edu to make a request for access.
  • Faculty interested in instruction sessions for the spring semester are encouraged to reach out to archives@lafayette.edu.
  • Non-Lafayette affiliated researchers who would like to access material from Special Collections & College Archives should also contact archives@lafayette.edu to discuss their research needs.
