Different disciplines tend to use different citation styles. This page lists the guidelines for three common styles that students may encounter at Lafayette: MLA, APA, and Chicago. If you are not sure what style you should use for a particular course, ask your professor. If you have any questions about citing sources, you can also consult a research librarian.

MLA

MLA (Modern Language Association) style is popular in the humanities, including English, comparative literature, and media studies.

APA

APA (American Psychological Association) style is widely used in psychology and sociology.

Chicago

Chicago style is used across a broad range of humanities and social science fields, including history, political science, and the arts. There are two variations of Chicago style: author-date (which uses in-text citations in parentheses) and notes and bibliography (which uses footnotes or endnotes). Ask your instructor which variation they would like you to use.
