In this student workshop on Saturday, November 7th, we’ll look at the many ways birds become data, and we’ll investigate the rich creative possibilities that sit at the intersection of nature, code and art. We’ll start the day off with a bird walk at Merrill Creek where we’ll visit some of the birds who’ve chosen to overwinter in Easton. In the afternoon we’ll learn how to access data from eBird and we’ll make bird data portraits using code and physical materials.

This workshop will be led by New York City-based artist, writer and teacher Jer Thorp. He is best known for designing the algorithm to place the nearly 3,000 names on the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan. Jer was the New York Times’ first Data Artist in Residence, is a National Geographic Explorer, and in 2017 and 2018 served as the Innovator in Residence at the Library of Congress. Jer is one of the world’s foremost data artists, and is a leading voice for the ethical use of big data. This event is co-sponsored by the Lafayette College Libraries and the Biology Department.
Space is limited, registration is required.
Transportation to Merrill Creek and lunch are provided.
