Librarians Terese Heidenwolf and Lijuan Xu were one of 26 teams from academic libraries that contributed to a new Ithaka S+R report on Teaching with Primary Sources: Looking at the Support Needs of Instructors. This was a qualitative study of how faculty in the humanities and social sciences use primary sources to teach undergraduates. Although we knew that some Lafayette faculty relied heavily on primary sources in their classrooms and for assignments, we had never explicitly investigated this aspect of faculty’s teaching. The opportunity to have in-depth discussions with faculty on this topic was therefore appealing, particularly because we hoped that it would bring to light ways that the Libraries could better support effective teaching with primary sources. Heidenwolf & Xu also published a local report on Supporting Teaching with Primary Sources at Lafayette College.
