Thank you to all who told us what you think of the Library’s space and what improvements you would like to see in Skillman Library. We heard you and want to let you know what changes we have already made and which ones are on the horizon. So what’s new? We know there are some areas which don’t have power outlets, so we now have 5 portable charging banks that can be checked out at the circulation desk. They can charge your laptop or phone in a few hours. We have also added lamps on the second floor that have both USB charging ports and wireless charging pads to charge your phone or tablet. Additionally, we knew that the building lacked adequate signage for restrooms, elevators, and ramps, and have ordered signage to indicate these throughout the library. In the meantime we have installed directories on all floors near the stairwells and inside the elevator to make finding your way easier.

So what’s coming? You confirmed what we already suspected –  the lower level of Skillman really needs a facelift. It’s dark, sometimes too loud, and not an uplifting space to study. So we are going to brighten up the space with biophilic elements which aim to increase connection to the natural world. This could be accomplished with the inclusion of indoor plants, images of nature, or use of natural colors. A lot of these elements can also dampen noise so can serve a dual purpose. In terms of furniture we want to add different types of seating like contemporary study pods, which provide a level of privacy and noise control without the need for private rooms, more booth seating and a collaborative workspace. We will be working with vendors and campus facilities in the near future to brighten up and improve our library spaces.

However, there is always more to learn and voices who are new to campus!
If you didn’t get a chance to tell us your thoughts during last year’s survey and feel passionately about some aspect of the library’s spaces or services, please feel free to let us know via our suggestion form

Thank you all for helping us grow!
