The Libraries have completed the purchase of the National Geographic Digital Archive. The collection covers Nat Geo from its first issue in 1888 as a scientific journal, through the transition to a popular magazine, and up to 2015. All issues are fully searchable and browsable, including covers, images, and advertisements, all in full color (once color printing was available).

The Nat Geo digital archive includes two other advanced features. The first allows users to search by type of image (e.g. map, portrait, painting, imge, etc.) and/or image description. A second feature allows users to explore term frequency — how often a certain word or phrase occurred in the magazine over a given set of years.
